Introduction to 340B

SUNRx offers a technology solution to federally qualified health centers who administer 340B services. A discount of 60% off drug costs is offered by manufacturers.

The 340B Drug Pricing Program resulted from enactment of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992, which is codified as Section 340B of the Public Health Service Act. The legislation requires pharmaceutical companies who participate in the 340B Drug Pricing program to offer their products to Eligible Entities at a deep discount – known as the “340B Price”. This price is often 60% less than the retail price for the drug.

Who is considered an “Eligible Entity” is determined by the legislation and can be a Federally Qualified Health Center, a consolidated health center, a disproportionate share hospital, and others. For the purposes of this introduction, we will refer to the Health Center, but understand that as we grow the 340B business we may work with many types of organizations.

The common thread among these entities is that they service a segment of the population that is either underprivileged, underinsured, or underserved or a combination of all three. Most of their patients are at or below the federally recognized poverty level.

In many situations, patients of the health center have limited access to healthcare services. Providers write prescriptions for patients that may be filled at a variety of retail drug stores and community pharmacies, but many of the health center patients lack the means to pay for prescription drugs at the prevailing average retail price.

Statistically, patients are more likely to fill their prescriptions when there is a pharmaceutical solution in place. While medication costs continue to rise, patients often are forced to choose between purchasing necessities or their medications. Providing patients with medication at the time of their office visit minimizes disease progression, improves therapy and compliance while bettering the patient’s quality of life.
