National Health Services Launches 340B Drug Discount Program to
Provide Low Cost Medications to Kern County Families

Shafter, CA and Bensalem, PA. National Health Services and healthcare technology company SUNRx today announced a new partnership to provide discounted prescription drugs through the federal 340B program to families in the Kern County area.
“Our new, expanded 340B program means that more of our patients can now afford their medications, manage chronic diseases and enjoy better health,” said Wagih H. Michael, Ph.D, National Health Services’ Executive Director.  “This program will make a big difference for many families in our community.”
National Health Services, Inc. (NHSI) started in 1978 as the Buttonwillow Health Center with a single clinic serving rural families without access to affordable care.  Today, National Health Services has 12 locations serving 60,000 patients annually across the county.
NHSI’s motto is “Health for All,” and their team of 300 highly trained physicians, nurse practitioners, and support staff follow this creed every day.  Nearly a third of National Health Services’ patients are uninsured or underinsured, and more than half are on government healthcare programs such as Medicare or Medi-Cal.
National Health Services patients are not unlike those nationwide who struggle to afford medications.  According to a recent study by the Kaiser Foundation, more than a quarter of Americans said they have not filled a prescription because of the expense.  Nearly one in five said they cut pills in half or skipped doses in an attempt to save money.
Created to expand access to affordable medications to low income and underserved populations, the 340B Program provides medications discounted 60% below retail prices through qualified community health centers and hospitals.  Despite the need, many community health centers have limited 340B programs – or none at all – due to the program’s complexity.  SUNRx’s fully automated solution helps health centers manage 340B programs, reduce paperwork, and provide more effective patient care.
“Patients with convenient access to affordable medications are more likely to follow their doctor’s orders, get well and stay healthy, and they are less likely to turn to the emergency room for care,” said Dr. Michael.  “This is not only good for the health of our patients, but it reduces the strain on the state and local healthcare system.”
“For more than three decades, National Health Services, Inc. has worked to improve access to quality healthcare in Kern County,” said SUNRx CEO Tim Liebmann.  “We are honored to join them in their mission, and help reduce the cost of medications and improve healthcare for thousands of families across the region.”
